Survey Debrief Facilitator Training
Culture safety results debriefing training for survey administrators, HR and Quality Improvement Directors.
Course Description:
The goal of debriefing is to encourage open communication, transparency, and interactive discussion about the survey results at the unit-level and between disciplines. This will enable leaders to understand survey results and collaborate with frontline staff in the development of improvement strategies.
Who Should Attend:
- Culture Survey Administrators
- Staff responsible for delivering safety culture results
- HR Managers/Directors

- Define and explain the debrief process
- Plan a debrief session including identifying opportunities for improvement

Rapid Event Response & Analysis
Training on the initial management, investigation, and analysis of adverse events.
Course Description:
Training to help hospitals launch a process improvement (PDSA) project aimed at enhancing the quality and reliability of its initial response to adverse events. Organizations will map their current processes and identify existing performance metrics, set aims, and begin planning small tests of change.
Who Should Attend:
- Individuals who investigate adverse events and those who facilitate RCAs
- Risk management, quality and patient safety professionals, HEART leads and executive sponsors, and representatives of stakeholder groups (e.g., an operational manager, charge nurse, house supervisor, member of patient & family advisory council)
Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
- Plan a rapid process improvement project to improve the timeliness and reliability of
organizations’ initial responses to adverse events
- Describe a timely and credible adverse event investigation and analysis
- Contrast an event analysis for purposes of communication and early resolution with
traditional RCAs for organizational learning

Cognitive Interviewing Workshop
Investigative interviewing skills for risk management, patient safety and patient experience professionals.
Course Description:
Trainees will gain basic skills for conducting fact-finding interviews and obtaining testimonial evidence. Topics include interviewing logistics, the fundamentals of memory and recall, dealing with potentially deceptive witnesses, and the evidence-based cognitive interviewing (CI) protocol.
Pre-work required:
1-hour self-study : documents will be provided to registered participants
Who Should Attend:
- Risk management, patient safety, and patient experience professionals
- Medication safety officers and medical staff officers
- Anyone else for whom investigative interviewing is an essential function of their job
Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the fundamentals of effective investigative interviewing
- Explain the role of memory and retrieval in testimonial evidence
- Demonstrate the skills of the cognitive interviewing protocol

Communication & Transparency
Empathic Communication
Skills to prepare a facility’s communication resource team members in conducting sensitive communication with patients and families after a patient safety event with empathy and compassion
Course Description:
Attendees will learn key steps in preparing for engaging in critical conversations with patients and families who have been harmed through the course of care and participate in experiential sessions designed to build skills in empathic and transparent communication needed for conversations with patients and family members.
Pre-work required: Complete the Communication Assessment at least two weeks prior to training.
Who Should Attend:
- Individuals responsible for communicating with patients and family members who
have been impacted by an adverse event
- Members of the designated communication resource team including, risk managers,
patient safety officers, medical staff clinical staff, and administrative leaders
Course Objectives:
At the completion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the BETA HEART approach to empathic communication after harm
- Understand the value of the communication assessment and how to utilize results in
communication resource team selection and process
- Recognize your role in the organization’s process for responding to harm and adverse events
- Incorporate use of HEART Toolkit communication tools when preparing for empathic conversations with patients, and family members
- Through simulated interactive exercise, begin to develop the skill set required to empathically communicate harm events with patients and families in person and via the phone

Care for the Caregiver
Peer Support Training
Course Description:
Training is designed to provide learners with an understanding of a Care for the Caregiver program in the context of BETA HEART, introduce participants to the components of a proactive peer support program and impart skills necessary to provide emotional support to members of the healthcare team impacted by harm or adverse events.
Pre-work required: All participants will complete a communication assessment (to be provided after registration)
Who Should Attend:
- Members of the designated Peer Support resource team, risk managers, patient safety officers, medical and clinical staff, and administrative leaders
Course Objectives:
At the completion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the BETA HEART approach to empathic peer support in the context of HEART.
- Describe how the communication assessment complements the Care for the Caregiver
strategy.
- Identify signs and manifestations of emotional trauma that indicate the need for peer
support, including recognizing the indications for referral to Tier 3 resources.
- Acquire the skill set to provide empathic peer support and overcome potential barriers
through simulated interactive exercises.
