Ms. Gocke has overall responsibility for Employee Safety and Patient Safety divisions of the Risk Management and Safety department at BETA Healthcare Group.  Before joining BETA Healthcare Group in 2009, she was a liability claims specialist for the SCPIE company and legal nurse consultant. She later accepted a position at the corporate headquarters of a 42-hospital system where she was involved in a variety of system-wide risk management and safety improvement efforts with a primary focus on enterprise-wide risk. Ms. Gocke is a certified professional in healthcare risk management, is a registered nurse specialty certified in obstetrics and holds a certificate as a paralegal.  She completed a Patient Safety Leadership fellowship in 2009 through the American Hospital Association, is past president of the Southern California Association for Healthcare Risk Management and served nine years on the Board of Directors of the National Certification Corporation, a nurse certification agency. Ms. Gocke earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Management and her Master of Science degree in Safety Leadership at the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine.

Ms. Sigl is a Risk Management and Employee Safety Specialist at BETA Healthcare Group. At BETA since 2017, she started in the Employee Safety division and was promoted to Executive Administrative Assistant supporting the Vice President of Risk Management and Safety and worked on multiple strategic initiatives and projects. In her current role, she uses her knowledge and education in risk principles, her organizational skills, and project management expertise to advance projects aimed at improving healthcare worker safety. Prior to BETA, she honed her administrative skills at technology and consulting firms. Completing English and Math coursework at Evergreen Valley College, Malinda earned her ARM (Associate in Risk Management) designation from The Institutes.

Ms. Tarnow joined BETA Healthcare Group in 2010, having been in healthcare for over 25 years. She is a Registered Nurse and certified professional in healthcare risk management. In her role as Senior Director, Risk Management and Patient Safety she leads the comprehensive, principled, and systematic approach to responding to and reducing harm in healthcare known as BETA HEART®. Prior to joining BETA, Ms. Tarnow was the Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety for an integrated healthcare system with responsibility for overall risk identification, loss prevention, sentinel event management, and development and implementation of reliable systems to promote patient safety. Ms. Tarnow is a past president and current member of the California Society of Healthcare Risk Management (CSHRM) and a member of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM). Ms. Tarnow earned her Bachelor’s degree in Health Services Administration, and in 2006 completed the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Patient Safety Officer training and the American Hospital Association Patient Safety Fellowship in 2013.

Mr. Stewart joined BETA in 2016 with experience as a risk manager and patient safety practitioner in hospital, ambulatory, and regional system settings. He leads the rapid adverse event response and analysis domain of BETA HEART^® and directs BETA’s employment practices liability (EPL) risk management program. Mr. Stewart has a clinical background in emergency nursing and holds master’s degrees in nursing/health policy from the University of California at San Francisco and in human factors and system safety from Lund University in Sweden. He received his law degree and certificate in health law from the University of Tulsa, and a graduate certificate in clinical bioethics from Loyola University Chicago. He is a past president of the American Association of Nurse Attorneys and former director of the California Society for Healthcare Risk Management.

Marlene Nazarey joined BETA in January 2020, as a Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety. She co-leads the Care for the Caregiver BETA HEART domain. Marlene is an RN and Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management. Her experience includes healthcare risk management at a large international insurance carrier, teaching in a baccalaureate nursing program, and various hospital management positions, including director of children’s services at several large community hospitals. Her clinical expertise includes neonatal and pediatric nursing. She received her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania in the specialty of nursing of children and her BSN from Widener University.  She has over 20 years of experience providing risk consulting services to hospitals, aging services, physicians, large medical groups and allied health facilities.

Al Duke brings over 19 years of emergency department experience from staff nurse to department manager, he has served in all capacities in the ED at both urban academic settings to smaller community hospitals. In addition, Al has faculty appointments at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and School of Nursing, providing interdisciplinary education in Leadership and Statistics. Dedicated to patient safety and quality care, Al contributed to the development of core competencies in emergency nursing in partnership with the Emergency Nurse Association and published on this work. He has also presented both locally, nationally, and internationally on TeamSTEPPS, simulation, and the use of Lean/Six Sigma strategies.

Al received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Loma Linda University and Masters in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. Additional certifications include Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management, Certified Professional in Patient Safety, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and continues to evolve in Just Culture and Human Factors concepts.

Ms. Fritz is a Masters-prepared RN with clinical skills spanning over two decades of service across the continuum of care and possessing a wealth of ergonomics and education experience. She has built successful, data-driven employee safety programs such as Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM), Slip/Trip/Fall prevention and Ergonomics. Prior to BETA, she served as the California Regional Manager for Injury Prevention and Ergonomics for Providence St. Joseph Health where she was responsible for 11 acute care facilities, additional offsite skilled nursing facilities, and outpatient services departments including clinics, home health and hospice.

Ms. Fritz received her RN from Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA, her designated Teaching Credential from UCLA, her BSN from Cal State Fullerton, Human Factors Engineering coursework from University of Michigan and her MSN from Walden University in Minnesota. She is an active volunteer with the Cancer Support Community and the Emergency Medical Reserve Corps.

Lisa Matheny, RN, B.S.N., CPHRM, C-EFM is a Director of Risk Management and Patient Safety at BETA Healthcare Group, focused on risk management, quality management, and perinatal patient safety. Ms. Matheny brings more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare field to BETA.  She is the co-lead of the culture domain for BETA HEART^® and is largely responsible for creating the debrief structure and methodology at BETA, her experience informed by her work at a large multi-entity hospital system where culture surveys were conducted. Previously, she spent 12 years bedside as a registered nurse and clinical supervisor in maternal-infant care and has led multiple perinatal patient safety initiatives.  Ms. Matheny also leads the OB Quest for Zero and Perinatal Safety Collaborative at BETA Healthcare Group.  A graduate of San Diego State University with a B.A. in Psychology, she also holds a B.S.N. degree from the University of Southern California.

Mrs. Olton is a risk management and patient safety consultant to BETA members. She leads the Just Culture program and the Culture of Safety domain of BETA HEART^®. She brings over 10 year of critical care experience to BETA. She also held leadership roles in the outpatient and radiology/imaging nursing department  as well as patient safety prior to joining BETA in 2019. Mrs. Olton received her master’s degree in nursing (healthcare administration) from the University of Texas, Arlington. Additional certifications include IHI Patient Safety Executive Certification.

Mr. Kooyman has worked in the workers’ compensation space for more than 16 years and has spent the last year and a half with BETA as an Employee Safety Manager.

Todd has dedicated the past 12 years of his career focused solely on healthcare training our members on workers’ compensation, supervising a 9-person team and working as a Senior Claims Examiner on highly complex litigated claims. He brings a passion for reducing employee injury and is highly attuned to the adverse impact an injury can have on an organization. His vast experience dealing with many types of healthcare-related injuries and the time it takes to recover, fuels his desire to assist our members in their loss control efforts.
Todd has SIP, Just Culture and ARM accreditations and graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Psychology.
