This presentation gives the learner an insight into the management of the pediatric patient that presents to the emergency department for psychiatric evaluation. In this presentation, Justin Milici outlines some of the more common psychiatric conditions as well as the treatments. In addition, Justin discusses the more common medications that this vulnerable population may be taking to better familiarize the ED nurse with their side effects and therapeutic objectives.

Objectives:

  • Describe the most common psychiatric emergencies seen in the ED
  • Understand the key components in a good assessment of a pediatric patient presenting to the ED for psychological evaluation
  • Compare and contrast the four main psychotropic medications that may be seen in pediatric patients presenting to the ED
