Healthcare accreditation processes are conducted with a focus on safety and quality of patient care. Sterilization and high-level disinfection in healthcare facilities has become an increasingly larger focus of the accreditation survey process. This presentation is intended to help healthcare professionals prepare for a Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) or other accrediting agency survey as it relates to reprocessing of surgical instruments and other reusable medical devices in healthcare settings.

Objectives:

In this presentation a commercial airline pilot reviews both CRM and TeamSTEPPS and expands upon the Threat and Error Management principle of CRM. While searching for “threats” care more concepts to adopt from aviation, more than just CRM and checklists.

  • Discuss the latest requirements from TJC and CMS that pertain to sterilization and high-level disinfection (HLD) in healthcare facilities
  • Describe key published standards, recommendations and guideline practices for safe and effective reprocessing of reusable devices
  • Explain how healthcare facilities can prepare for an accreditation survey relating to sterilization and HLD
